On December 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States, bombing battleships and other military targets at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Over 350 Japanese aircraft carried out two waves of attacks on the Pearl Harbor naval base, dropping armor-piercing bombs and launching torpedoes at U.S. battleships and cruisers.
