The outbreak of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in Europe has so far caused 22 deaths and over 2,200 infections. Initially, German authorities identified Spanish-imported cucumbers as the cause of the outbreak, which incited anger among many Spanish farmers. The Spanish farmers claimed that due to the erroneous judgment of German authorities, the export volume of Spanish cucumbers had significantly decreased, causing them to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in business.
