There is no doubt that China is a major area in the production and consumption of disposable chopsticks. Is it really necessary to cut down so many big trees just for one meal, after which they are simply discarded? In response to the call of Greenpeace, 200 university student volunteers from Beijing spent three weeks collecting 80,000 used disposable chopsticks, which were then re-sculpted by artists into four "big trees" about five meters high. However, seeing their withered yellow color, one cannot help but feel a bit sad.
Background: Every year, China produces 57 billion pairs of chopsticks, at the cost of consuming forests covering an area of 1.18 million square kilometers.
